Customer Spotlight: Green Well Drilling

For 25 years, Green Well Drilling has been serving Florida’s agricultural, residential, and public water supply needs with integrity and dedication. Founded in 2000 by Jason Arocho, the Lakeland-based company started with humble beginnings — one man and an old cable tool rig.

Today, Green Well Drilling operates two Versa-Drill rigs and employs a tight-knit team of nine. Their work spans agriculture, domestic, irrigation, public supply, geothermal, injection, and production wells, with a strong presence in the Plant City area — the winter strawberry capital of the world.

The company’s commitment to craftsmanship and character has made Green Well Drilling a trusted name in Florida. It’s also become a true family business, with Jason’s daughter recently joining the team and working toward her own contractor’s license.

We spoke with Jason about how the company got its start, how Versa-Drill rigs have shaped their success, and what it takes to build a business rooted in values that last.

Q&A with Jason Arocho, Founder of Green Well Drilling

Q: Tell us about how Green Well Drilling got its start.

Jason: I started the company in August of 2000 with a cable tool rig — very slow, very labor-intensive — but that’s what we could afford. It was just me at first, subbing out work from other contractors in the area who weren’t drilling anymore. It was hard work, but that’s how we got our foot in the door.

As we started getting busier, I realized I couldn’t do it all myself. So, I hired help and grew from there. The business really changed when I bought my first Versa-Drill around 2005. That was a game-changer.

Q: What was it about that first Versa-Drill that made such a difference?

Jason: It was a 2000 model V100 that I bought down in Cape Coral. Before that, with the cable tool, it was tough to keep up — especially in our area, where strawberry farming drops the water tables and new casing requirements come into play.

The Versa-Drill made it possible to keep up with that demand using mud rotary. It saved us time and money and opened the door to bigger projects.

Q: How has your fleet evolved since then?

Jason: After that first Versa-Drill, we added an ’07 Versa-Drill — a remanufactured rig we still run today. Over the years, we’ve owned several rigs from other brands like Mobile, Failing, and Kelly, but Versa-Drill stands out for its durability.

We even tried a brand-new rig from another company a couple of years ago, and it failed in soft material. That’s when we went back to Versa-Drill and bought a new V-140X last December. It’s been fantastic — our guys just finished a job at a local racetrack with it.

Q: How do you approach leadership and employee care at Green Well Drilling?

Jason: When you start a business, you have a vision — but it’s not just about you. Every person you hire has goals and dreams, too. We provide health insurance, 401(k) matching, vacation time — the full package. It’s not cheap, but it’s the right thing to do.

We also have Tuesday morning meetings, and we end each one with prayer. Everyone has a voice here. If you take care of your people, they’ll take care of your customers.

Q: What do you think sets Versa-Drill rigs apart from others you’ve used?

Jason: Durability. I could take a sledgehammer to the back of a Versa-Drill table, and it wouldn’t flinch — maybe just scratch the paint. With another brand, I could tap it with a small hammer and break it.

The durability and craftsmanship are unmatched with Versa-Drill — and when we call the team for parts, they answer. You get what you need fast. That matters, because when the rig’s not running, you’re not making money.

Q: Have you seen Versa-Drill’s impact beyond your own company?

Jason: Absolutely. When I first brought that red Versa-Drill to the area back in 2005, the other local drillers — most of them cable tool guys — were amazed. Now they all run Versa-Drills. I like to think we helped inspire that. When something works, word gets around.

Q: Any final thoughts or advice for others in the drilling industry?

Jason: Stay focused and keep your blinders on. Don’t worry about what other companies are doing — just do your best work, treat your people right, and be honest with your customers.

Character and integrity will take you farther than anything else.
